Ellen Yack and Associates was established in 1985 to fill the gap in the provision of occupational therapy services to children and their families living in Toronto and the surrounding area. At that time, there were extensive waiting lists for occupational therapy assessment and treatment at hospital and community based programs. Many of these programs also had restrictive admission criteria. Some programs only accepted children within certain age ranges or with specific diagnoses.

Ellen, who at the time was a member of various professional associations and committees, was aware that many children did not have access to necessary occupational therapy services. She was encouraged to start her private practice to provide parents with another option. This option was particularly important for children with autism spectrum disorders who were not eligible to receive occupational therapy treatment at most facilities. Unfortunately, extensive waiting lists continue to exist today. Many outpatient occupational therapy programs have been reduced and many facilities continue to have restrictive admission criteria.

As the demand for service continued, Ellen brought in other occupational therapists to work in the practice. Associates were chosen who could bring passion and a variety of expertise to meet the needs of a growing client base. Recently, speech and language pathology services have been made available to further expand options and allow for comprehensive care.
